Have you ever wondered about the meaning behind our name? Well, we have a story to tell you…
Argyle Square (where the hotel is located) is named after the Dukes of Argyll, a prominent Scottish noble family. The square, like many locations in London, reflects the historical practice of naming streets, squares, and areas after influential figures, families, or places of significance.
Belonging to one of the most powerful and influential clans of Scotland named the Campbell family, this prestigious title was created in the Peerage of Scotland in 1701 for one particular member, Archibald Campbell 10th Earl of Argyll. The family extended their cultural, military, and political involvements to the country of England which solidified their presence and memory in British history.
It is not unlike areas of England to name their streets after people of high importance. In fact, during the 19th Century when the country saw significant development, developers and city planners often named new streets and squares after notable aristocratic families or their estates to lend prestige and attract residents and investors.
We invite you to The Gyle to experience all our nods to the The Duke of Argyll, with our Scottish inspired décor, whiskeys, and our mascot Archibald.
